Fog or condensation or windows are generally not a cause for concern. However, there are certain conditions that may indicate it is a problem — which is why you should never ignore foggy windows altogether. In today’s post, the window and siding contractors at Triangle Home Exteriors take a look at the types of window condensation and why you should keep an eye out for them.
Condensation forms when humid air meets a surface with a lower temperature. Perhaps the most common example of this is the condensation that collects on the surface of a cold glass of drink. The moisture doesn’t come from the contents of the glass, but from the air around it. This is also why eyeglasses become foggy when the person wearing them comes from a cold room. Condensation forms on windows when the glass is colder than the air. The more humid the air is, the more pronounced the condensation will be.
Under most conditions, window condensation is not a bad thing — definitely not something that you need to call your window and roof replacement contractor for. It’s important to note which side of the window is “sweating” or getting foggy. During the summer season, it is common to find condensation on the outside of the window when the air is humid. During the winter season, you may find condensation on the indoor side. In both cases, it means the seals around the windows are working perfectly. However, you will need to control your home’s relative indoor humidity levels if indoor condensation is persistent.
There is one condition that you should be concerned about. If your windows are equipped with double or triple-pane glass and condensation is forming between the glass panels, it means the seals around the glass edges have failed. Depending on the extent of the damage, you should expect to have the windows replaced if repairs fail.
