Metal Roofing: Most Common Fastening Methods

Metal panels make a weather-resistant roof not just because of what they’re made from but also due to how they were fastened. Generally, there are two ways to put metal roofing panels together. Triangle Home Exteriors explains further:

Through-Fastening System

When doing roof replacement in relatively small houses, the use of fasteners that penetrate the metal is common. Roofing panels that use through-fastening systems usually have integral screwing flanges with neoprene washers and use gaskets to waterproof the gaps.

Through-fasteners are typically exposed to the elements and may loosen in time due to thermal cycling. For this reason, metal roofs that use through-fastening systems should have limited dimensions since they tend to restrict panel movement.

Experienced home exterior remodeling companies, like Triangle Home Exteriors, agree that exposed fasteners may require maintenance too since they’re susceptible to the weather. Without regular inspection, causes of moisture intrusion can go under the radar, which can lead to water damage.

Clip-Fastening System

In this fastening method, the roof is fastened directly to the sheathing using clips. Since they’re part of the panels at the seams, the clips can stay out of view to limit weather exposure. Furthermore, the use of clips allows unlimited panel movement. Panels can be manufactured to any length since they can expand and contract freely.

The biggest caveat when choosing the clip-fastening method is the cost. Veteran roofing and siding contractors attest that metal roofs with clips typically cost more money to fabricate and to install.
