Is It OK to Mix Different Deck Flooring Types?

When planning a deck installation project, the materials to be used should be chosen carefully. The type and quality of materials you’ll pick will significantly impact the overall result of the job. While wood and composite are the most popular options for deck flooring, you can also combine the two materials for your outdoor living space.

Keep reading as Triangle Home Exteriors shares tips on how to mix different deck flooring types.

Wood vs. Composite Deck Floors

Wood can provide your deck with a warmer, more natural look. This material is also more durable and eco-friendly. With proper installation and maintenance, a wood deck can last for more than 40 years.

On the other hand, a composite deck is purposely designed to withstand ultraviolet light. Composite also requires less maintenance as it is resistant to damage caused by mold, rot and insects. Compared to wood, a composite deck is more cost-effective because it can last longer and requires less upkeep.

The Benefits of Combining the Two Materials

While you can simply choose either wood or composite for your new deck, using them together will allow you to take advantage of each material’s strengths to make up for the other’s weaknesses. For example, pressure-treated wood is more cost-effective than composite decking. You can reduce your deck renovation cost by using wood for joists and upright supports and opting for composite for the more visible sections.

When it comes to environmental concerns, composite is not the best choice as it’s partly made with plastic. However, it offers excellent resistance to moisture damage. If you want to minimize plastic consumption and ensure a durable deck at the same time, you can mix composite and wood to achieve both goals.

One more benefit of combining wood and composite is that it allows you to maintain your deck more easily. Since wood is more vulnerable to moisture damage and other effects of weather elements, you won’t have to worry about keeping your deck sealed and stained. On the other hand, composite has a higher resistance to different weather conditions, so you can use it for the exposed areas of your deck.
